| About Elephants |
Trunk The most versatile part of the elephant. This is a flexible muscular organ. This is a boneless mass of flesh and can bend easily. This is an extension of the nose and the upper lip. It is 2 meters long and weighs around 140kg. The trunk has a finger like lip at the end which can distinguish between shape, texture, size, hot and cold. Using this part elephant smells, breaths, collects food, trumpets, grabs things, caress its young, used for fighting and sprays water over the body. In humans sweating is done through the skin but in elephant sweating is through the trunks. The trunk contains 100,000 muscles. Elephants trunkful water almost weighs 10L. He uses the trunk as a hose and pour this into the mouth. In Kerala the trunk of an auspicious elephant may trail into the ground and it must be fleshy and long. Elephant uses the trunk as snorkel, while swimming. The trunk can smell anything and can be directed easily toward the source.
