The first woman mahout of Asia Nibha, have a post graduation in Zoology had started a paliative care clinic
for abused elephants in her home at Kodeeri Mana, Thiroor. She was very
craze about the elephants from her childhood. After her PG she spent four
years to study about these pachyderms, after that she had written a book 'Guide
to Elephant Welfare' in association with Dr.P.B.Giridas from Ayyanthole.
Her Illam(home) had an elephant, so the cruelty towards the elephant was an
agony for her. This heartfelt intimation towards this wild animal inspired
her to start such a non profitable organization in her home itself. The
compound is having an area of 3.5 Acres. Doctors from Allopathy and Ayurveda
examines the weak and wounded elephants here. Nibha is now trying to earn
the money to conduct this elephant care centre through echo tourism.
A mahout's job is a male dominated area in
Kerala and her entry into this challenging job will empower the woman to
take more risky jobs for their passion or for a living. Now she is the
Secretary of Thrissur's Academy of Elephant Management. "I was not
driven by any feminist emotion but by an urge to know elephants better," she
declares. The Elephant Care Centre has a mission to rehabilitate the domesticated elephants who are incapable to work due to physical and psychological reasons. Nibha and her colleagues had started the centre in 2005. To reach their goal they need help from various phases of the society ....
