Kodanad the elephant sanctuary in
Kerala is in Ernakulam District. Two baby elephants Aswathi and Niranjan dead
within 2 week. It is reported that 'Herpis Virus' infection is the reason behind
the death. The officials at the camp had taken actions to prevent the infection.
Aswathi was one and a half years old had brought from the Wayanad forest one
year ago. Doctors warned the authorities about the contagious infection
reported in the elephants. It is the first time in Kerala this type of
viral infections resulted into the death of two baby elephants. The
Government had ordered an investigation about this incident. Kodanad is the only one centre for the training of baby elephants in Kerala. Forest Department is spending a lot of money for the well fare and training of elephants but still no developments in the field of the treatment of elephants. There is no permanant treating facility or Doctors for the elephants at Kodanad. Reports from various media shows that after the death no serious studies had not done. Another baby elephant (11/2 years old)named Bharathi is unable to move due to Arthritis. Allopathy treatments found no response and now undergoing some ayurvedic treatments. She was recovered from a nearby forest named Perruthode.
