Auspicious signs of an Elephant

  • Vayukumbham(forehead bump) must be broad and projecting forwards
  • Thalakkuni(twin domes on the head) must be big and raised
  • A majestic look with a raised head and low back
  • The legs must be straight without deformity
  • The eyes must be clear with the colour of the honey
  • Ears must be large and during fanning produce a loud flapping sound
  • The tusks should grow downwards, rise up and then be evenly separated
  • The tusk(kombu)should be white, without scraps
  • The colour of the tusk is that of butter or sandalwood.
  • The trunk(thumbikkai) may trail into the ground even if the elephant's head is high and it must be fleshy and long
  • The temporal region must be swollen and fleshy
  • The area where the mahout sits(Irikkasthanam) must be broad and fleshy
  • Teeth should be good and strong
  • The tail must be long enough to touch the ankle
  • The end of the tail must be with ample hair
  • Tail should not touch the ground
  • The number of nails will be 20 or 18(5x2+4x2).  They must be clear and without cracks
  • The colour must be in jet dark or colour of the black teak
  • Neck must be short
