About elephants

Elephants are the largest living land animal in the world.  The huge mammals are endangered species due to poaching for ivory trade and shrinking living space.  They are keystones species affecting biodiversity of the place they inhabit. 

They are divided into two species

  1. Asian Elephant-Elephas Maximus
  2. African Elephant-Loxodonta Africana

 

  • Elephants are mammals. 
  • Gestation period of an elephant is 22 months!
  • An elephant calf weighs almost 120Kg at birth.

Musth

Elephants become adults in 8-12years. Glands in either side of the forehead produces a thick fluid called musth. During this period they show irritating nature. They will attack humans and other animals. A strong belief exists that the musth is to attract the females but it has no scientific proof.
